In math, our units of study include:

Number sense (place value, comparing, rounding whole numbers
& decimals)

Computation and estimation of whole numbers and
decimals (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing)

Geometry (plane geometry; lines and
angles; solid geometry)

Fractions

Measurement (linear, weight, capacity, time, area,
perimeter, temperature)

Probability and Statistics (graphing; statistics;
determining mean, median, mode, range; tree diagrams; probability)

Patterns, functions, and introductory algebra
To compliment the math curriculum, I also
teach Arithmetic Developed Daily (ADD).

Grade Math Curriculum Map
Science
In 5th grade, we cover the following units of study:

Living Systems (cells, using microscopes, 5 kingdoms)

Oceanography (physical and biological, geology of ocean
floor, public policy regarding the oceans)
-
Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Changes (the rock cycle, types
of rocks, Earth's interior, plate tectonics, weathering and erosion, human
impact on the Earth's suface)
-
Matter (atoms, molecules, elements, and compounds; mixtures
and solutions)
-
Sound (sounds waves, pitch, frequency)
-
Light (visible spectrum, light waves, reflection,
refraction, concave and convex lenses, prisms, contributions of Galileo,
Hook, van Leeuwenhoek, and Newton)
All units of study include scientific investigation, reasoning,
and logic.
5th
Grade Science Curriculum Map
Health
In 5th grade, we study the major body systems, nutrition,
exercise, character education, and the students participate in the D.A.R.E.
Program.
The D.A.R.E. program lasts one semester with a DARE officer
meeting with the class weekly to discuss the importance of a positive
self-image, accepting responsibility for one's own actions, justifying the
refusal of unnecessary drug use and the effects of drugs on body functions,
academic, and athletic performance. Students analyze public service
announcements and product literature. Students must also write an essay on the
importance of staying drug free. A graduation ceremony is held at the end
of the semester to recognize the students' commitment to stay drug free.
Our character education programs consists of the following

Two students are chosen from our class each six weeks that model
the character trait for that six weeks. Their names are displayed in the
front hallway and in our school newsletter.

Social Studies and History
Our main focus in fifth grade is United States History. We
will be working from two textbooks, History Alive! and Horizons.
Our major units of study are listed below.

Language
Arts
Reading
IIn addition to reading stories from the basal, we will be
reading the following trade books:

Word
Study
We utilize Words Their Way and
learn about base words, suffixes, prefixes, compound words, and syllabication.
Writing
Students will exploring several different types of writing such
as narrative, expository, descriptive, business letters, informative, and
persuasive. By the end of the year, students should be able to write an
essay that includes an introductory paragraph, a three part body (at least three
parts), and a concluding paragraph. Each paragraph should begin with an
introductory sentence followed by at least three supporting sentences. Each
piece of writing will go through the prewriting, rough drafting, editing,
revising and publishing stages. The students will also work on extending
their subject and predicate with detail and description. We will be using
the NCS Mentor for Virginia when we are writing or editing an essay.
